Vision: Susan Dersé, GHS Principal, explained her vision of creating supplemental support for Garfield programs and students culminating in Fall of 2003 with a gala event. Susan's goal is to have at least a $1 million endowment in three years time. [See her 4/26/2002 e-mail for details.]

Data: Some facts that were mentioned:
GHS is in its 80th year, 1924 was the first graduating class.
GHS operating budget for 2001-2002 is almost exactly $6 million.
Gates Foundation gave GHS $330,000 for 2001-2002.
GHS PTSA raised $60,000 this year; previous few years were $22,000 and $30,000.
GHS refurbishment/remodel starts in four years, so only doing essential maintenance now.
Franklin raised $3,000 at a "seed event" (come meet the new principal) about a year before their gala.
Franklin gala mailed 11,000 invitations, had 427 attendees and raised $350,000.
Franklin Foundation has 17 trustees, endowment is now $500,000.
Ballard Foundation has ~40 trustees, endowment is ???.

Process: Group discussion focused on the potential for the Garfield community in the establishment of a foundation/endowment/alumni organization, and clarification of how the Organizing committee will work. Lorna passed out a preliminary planning format to serve as a project guide, and discussed an initial organizational timeline.

Housekeeping: Ben Slivka has created http://www.ghsaf.org/ for us and he will post a chart of Organizing committee member names with phone/email addresses, etc., meeting minutes, and other pertinent information.
Note: For privacy reasons, the e-mail address and phone numbers of the committee members are not listed on a public web page.

For the Next Meeting: Bring others who might be interested in joining the group, particularly alumni –- and the contact information on those who just want to help. The agenda will include discussion on:
  • setting the vision
  • naming the group
  • Organizing committee infrastructure
  • summer assignments
Assignment: Start gathering names of class reunion organizers or bring class lists from any past or pending class reunions.
