Mission and Vision Statements
Keeping in mind this terse summary of the guidelines from www.allianceonline.org:
   Properties of a Mission Statement
1) Purpose -- Why? What result?
2) Business –- Activity which accomplishes Purpose.
3) Values –- Principles or beliefs which guide members in carrying out activities.

Properties of a Vision Statement
1) What does success look like?
2) Should be:
   a. Realistic and Credible
   b. Well-articulated and easily understood
   c. Appropriate
   d. Ambitious
   e. Responsive to Change

We considered the following two draft statements that Ben dashed off quickly this afternoon:
*DRAFT* Mission Statement:
      The mission of the Garfield High School Foundation is to enrich and enhance the historic, diverse, urban student experience at Garfield High School by funding non-recurring projects from an endowment built-up by contributions from alumni and friends of Garfield High School.
*DRAFT* Vision Statement:
The vision of the Garfield High School Foundation is a future where Garfield High School is the best public high school -- for all students -- in Washington State.

After a limited amount of discussion, Ben created these revised (but still draft!) statements:
*DRAFT #2* Mission Statement:
      The mission of the Garfield High School Foundation is to enrich and enhance the historic, diverse, urban student experience at Garfield High School by funding significant projects through gifts -- either to an endowment or toward designated purposes -- from alumni and friends of Garfield High School.
*DRAFT #2* Vision Statement:
The vision of the Garfield High School Foundation is a future where every single student at Garfield High School successfully reaches their full academic potential.

Please send Ben your ideas, comments, or drafts of Mission and Vision Statements!

Foundation vs. Alumni Association
Several of the mission and vision statement items that received votes at the last (8/13) Organizing committee meeting -- and most of the (small number of) e-mails we receive at www.ghsaf.org -- are typical alumni association activities.

After some discussion, we agreed to stay on the current course. To wit: as in the draft mission statements above, the focus of the foundation is raising money to support Garfield. Toward that end, the Foundation will:
a) Create and maintain a living alumni database;
b) Communicate with Alumni regularly (quarterly?) to keep them connected with Garfield;
c) Solicit Alumni at least annually for contributions to the Foundation;
d) Facilitate Alumni reunions by making subsets of the database available to bonafide alumni class representatives;

The Foundation will not pursue any other typical alumni association activities, including: a) identifying reunion class leadership and provding support for their activities; b) organizing alumni reunions; c) identifying or bestowing alumni recognition awards; d) etc.

Event Planning
We discussed the need to start taking the Foundation out to a wider audience. Following the successful model of the foundations for Franklin and Ballard High Schools, we agreed to host a "Seed" Event on Thursday, November 7th, 2002, to raise funds to support a "Big Party" Event in the Fall of 2003.

The Seed Event would last ~90 minutes, ideally be hosted at a big house on Lake Washington near Garfield, serve wine and light food, and have ~75 carefully selected guests (alumni, friends, some parents) who know to bring their checkbooks. There would be a student presentation (ex: Garfield Jazz Band subset), Susan Derse would introduce herself and her administrative team and talk about the school and her vision, and then a Organizing committee member would stand up and "make the ask" for funds to support the big party. The list of potential trustees that the Trustee Committee has already produced would be one source of possible guests for this event.

Judith Gille, chair of the Development Committee, volunteered to take charge of planning the event. The first planning meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 25th at 7:30am at the Starbucks on 23rd and Jackson. Please RSVP to Judith (JGille7@aol.com, 206.324.6587) if you want to attend the meeting and help out with the Seed Event!

Governance and 501(c)(3) Status
Since the Seed Event will collect money, we agreed to push forward to gain 501(c)(3) status for the Foundation. Jessica Pearlman, '92, an attorney at Preston, Gates, has already volunteered to do this work. Ben will contact Jessica, and if she is still willing, point her at Peter to get the ball rolling. Our target is to have the paperwork done and a bank account open two weeks before the Seed Event (so 10/24/02).
